Oceanos Sinking

The ill fated ship was sunk on the eastern coast of South Africa. Reportedly, the ship was on its way to the Wild Coast of the Transkei then suddenly an explosion occurred in the engine room that created a big hole there. The sea water started entering into the ship. The report of this incident was brought to the captain Yiannis Avranas who was such a cruel man that he ordered all his crew members to leave the ship without informing passengers about that. Crew followed the directions of their captain and left the ship with him without ringing the emergency alarm.

The poor passengers only came to know when some of them saw lower deck filled with sea water. They told other passengers about that. Some other revealed that they had not seen any of the crew members for hours and they thought they had been left the ship leaving them for dying.

Tv Trays As Seen On Tv

Ship entertainers Julian Butler, Moss and Tracy Hills were the only one to come forward and help the passengers. Because they were linked to the ship for a long time, they knew what to do in difficult hours. They called to South African Navy and Air Force and told them about the location of the ship and asked for a quick rescue operation. A very quick response was given by forces and 16 helicopters were immediately sent to airlift the remaining passengers. The efforts of emergency rescue proved fruitful for 571 passengers and they saved their lives. The rescue operation lasted for seven hours.

A documentary movie is to go on air tonight at NBC about ship where the survivors will describe what was happened on that day with them.

Elements of 1960s Retro Decorating Style

The Sixties were a time of enormous change, both technologically and socially. The space race was on and the American culture was focused on Sputnik, the Cold War and jet airplanes that were able to transport people faster than ever before.

Tv Trays As Seen On Tv

American culture was also focused on a younger generation that was busy rebelling against long-established traditions. This rebellion had a huge impact on fashion, music and home decor. Everything became more dynamic, graphic and colorful. London was also a major influence on design and trends, especially with their most famous export, The Beatles. In 1964 the first discotheque opened in L.A. and quickly caught on across the country. The high-tech metallic and mirrored look of the discos influenced home and office interior design. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the hippie culture with travel to India and Morocco introduced the "ethnic" look. The words "Peace" and "Love" were seen everywhere as both graphic symbols and as a mantra of a generation. Life in the 60s focused on self-expression and home decor was just the place for people to make their individual statement.

Tv Trays As Seen On Tv

The elements of 1960s decor are:

Colors
Colors were inspired by nature. Green, gold, orange and yellow were very popular and could be found on everything from clothes, home decor and even cars. But in the 60s colors were pumped up to vibrant hues. Psychedelic colors played off one another for maximum impact. Combinations such as fuchsia pink and tangerine orange were placed side-by-side. Bright and metallic vinyl wallpapers are used. Contrasts in black-and white were also popular. The desired effect was to create maximum impact for a striking, provocative look.

Fabrics
Tie-dye, psychedelic, paisley and floral fabrics were popular. The more colorful the fabrics, the better, seen with larger sized, stylized flowers and brighter colors than ever before. Neon colors created a very modern look. The hippie look consisted of ethnic prints like Indian fabrics made of cotton. Indian saris were used as bedspreads, curtains and wall hangings.

Furniture
Flat pack furniture, "S" and pod-shaped chairs made of space age shapes and materials were the look. Furniture was made of metal, glass, wood and PVC and sometimes combinations of these. New technologies allowed furniture to be made from molded plastic and formed into organic or space age shapes. A lot of furniture was designed to be disposable and temporary. Open shelving in the Danish style was often used as room separators. Styles were fun and witty overall. Homes were now being built with casual family rooms or dens in addition to having just a formal living room. The TV became the focal point of the family room. TV trays were designed so dinner could be eaten where the family gathered-in front of the television.

Flooring
A popular flooring trend of the 60s was shag rugs. Also brightly colored textured rugs and rugs made in India and Morocco. No-wax vinyl floors were coming into vogue, replacing harder to care for linoleum.

Decor Accessories
Accessories were decorated with popular design elements like Siamese cats, mushrooms, roosters, daisies and owls. Copper and other metals were very popular. Pop art inspired by comic books and popular culture (think Andy Warhol and his "Campbell's Soup" painting). Modern art with geometric shapes and vibrant colors decorated homes, as well as psychedelic prints and op art. This look was referred to as "Mod". Posters became an accepted, inexpensive way to decorate. Lighting was exciting with lava lamps and fiber optics. The hippie look created a contrast to the modern techno look, with more muted colors and ethnic patterns. Hanging beads and leather fringe added to the hippie look.

New Technologies
Satellites allowed for transatlantic television, which contributed to Europe's (esp. Great Britain's) influence on American culture. Lucite and colored plastics were used for furniture and home accessories. Tupperware, although it had been around since 1946, was in nearly every home and was available in an array of colors. There was an emphasis on entertaining, and a multitude of kitchen appliances were created to make gatherings easier and more comfortable. Some of these appliances included electric coffee pots, electric skillets, toaster ovens and fondue pots. Electric ranges had been around since 1882, but were becoming a lot more popular in kitchens in the 1960s.

Overall Look
The overall look of the 60s was clean and open. Modernism and abstract expressionism began to take hold in the 1960s. The traditional past was rejected and new trends and points of view were celebrated. Design became a means of provoking emotion and reaction. In addition, Minimalism, as a form of Modernism reduced design to only the most essential elements. In contrast, the "flower power" and Hippie movements were more decorative and ethnic in nature.

Oreck Vacuum - As Seen on TV - Review

Basically there are only 3 main differences in all Oreck uprights

Tv Trays As Seen On Tv

1. Filtration. There is the standard filtration and there is the Oreck Hypo Allergenic filtration made for people with allergies and wanting a higher grade of filtration.
2. Styles of handles. For recent models there are really only 2 different types of handles. The straight handle and the ergonomic helping handle.
3. XL2 Models. This is one of the newer models and they seem to be a little bigger with bigger bags which would increase airflow and filtration.

Tv Trays As Seen On Tv

Other than that all Orecks are basically the same as far as performance.

The selling point on these vacuums is that they only weigh 8 lbs and are very easy to use and vacuum with. Parts are readily available. An Oreck's average life span that was properly taken care of is about 12 years. The strength of this vacuum is in its brushroll. Its brushroll speed is quite a bit faster than your average vacuum and so it is a really good sweeper and a great vacuum. When you are vacuuming with one it appears to vacuum up everything in its path. This vacuum works well and is very light. A lot of elderly people use Oreck vacuums and many people who have lots of stairs (they are very easy to carry) use them as well.

I've had the Oreck XL 12 years, and I use it twice a week in a 2200 sq ft house in every room. In 12 years, I have spent 8 on maintenance of this vacuum. I replaced the belt twice, I replaced the beater brush twice, and I had to put in a new fan unit, a few weeks ago. It was so old that it has the cast aluminum fan which is no longer available. I had to replace the fan because my friend vacuumed his garage with it. He said that it even picked up nails. When I got the Oreck back, it had lost most of its suction. for a new fan belt and brush, and again as good as new. I do not understand the people who write about having problems with their Oreck. I still have my original belt in the spare belt holder under the vacuum. I keep it in case I need a replacement. From time to time, the tube will get clogged right where it attaches to the bag. You unzip the cloth bag, pull the replaceable bag off the tube, pull the clog out with your finger, stuff it in the replaceable bag, then reattach the bag. Now zip the cloth bag and you're done. This takes about 30 seconds, and Ive had to do it about 10 times in 12 years. I liked my Oreck so much, I just bought the XL 21. I compared my Oreck to my friend's Dyson animal. I had a full bag in my Oreck and vacuumed a section of carpet. He went over the same section with his Dyson, and it picked up very little. (But enough to make me skeptical of my Oreck for a spell.) I replaced the bag in my Oreck, which was well above the full line, and I had him vacuum a different section of the carpet after he emptied his Dyson. I vacuumed the same section with the new bag, and he took his Dyson back and now owns an Oreck XL.

Death Watch

I was with her today. She had been unconscious for days, wrapped tightly in blankets like a newborn so her arms clutched her chest; she would die probably without regaining any sense of life.

Tv Trays As Seen On Tv

Yet today, for a moment, she raised her sallow face, the crevasses cut deep and angular by years and current malnourishment; her eyes slit to let the painful light of earth ease in for just one more second, and she saw me. It was probably the last face she'll see from this life she chose.

Tv Trays As Seen On Tv

They mull about the room, maybe not as confused as we think, staring at the dying mother, for death is here and nudges them too as a reminder of what will and must come. He lingers with us in the hospital hallway outside the room, a friend we hate, pressing us, daring us to crack an errant joke or mention God. He knows (Death does) our ignorance and our faulty gaze, and maybe instead of reveling in our fear he tries desperately, in horror, to make us see his side; we are averted.

Still, death has always been an old friend of mine, my study companion, the one I trust to release me someday. I study my grandmother's hollow mouth, her shallow breath, and I smile silently to myself, hoping the others, who couldn't understand, haven't seen.

He's come for her, but he's simply an escort this time - she's called this shot. She commanded death to halt for a moment as she gazed upon me, upon this light, for a moment before the change (she died later that night at 4 am). I love you, Nonnie. Have a great trip.

Cartoons - The Japanese Invasion

For the kids of today who think that these Japanese imports are a new thing, you may be surprised to find out that Japanese import cartoons have been going on for some time. We're going to touch on just a small portion of those cartoons going back to the early 1960s.

Tv Trays As Seen On Tv

Cartoons in America, for the most part, were dominated by the likes of Warner Brothers and Walt Disney with such titles as Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse and a host of other characters. But around the early to mid 60s a new kind of cartoon was coming onto the scene. These cartoons were very different from the ones we were used to seeing. They were darker, more serious and very well done. They also had a very distinctive look to them, mostly in the characters themselves. If you take a look at American made cartoons, especially around the area of the eyes, you will notice that they look almost like a real person's eyes would look, within reason of course. After all, they're still cartoons. But these Japanese imports had a very different look, especially around the eyes, which could only be described as looking like "robot eyes". They definitely were not human. For that matter, the Japanese invasion that began in the 60s was far from human.

Tv Trays As Seen On Tv

A slew of these cartoons all hit the American airwaves pretty much at one time. The most popular of these were "Astro Boy", which was the first of the 60s invasion cartoons in 1963, "Speed Racer", "8th Man", and "Gigantor". All of these cartoons contained either a fantasy or science fiction theme.

Speed Racer was about a boy and his race car, the Mach 5, which could do things that even today's cars can't do. Speed had his sidekicks, Spridle, Chimp Chimp, and Trixie to help him out of tough jams.

The 8th Man cartoon was about a man who was almost killed but brought back to life in the form of a robot, which is tobor spelled backwards. Yes, tobor was the alias of this robot who could take on the appearance of any person alive. A very handy trick when having to sneak into the criminal's facility.

Gigantor was basically the story of a boy and his gigantic robot. Gigantor could usually be seen battling other gigantic robots in each episode. No matter how grim things looked, you could always count on Gigantor to come out the victor.

Because the cartoons were made in Japanese, they had to be dubbed in English for American audiences. Because of this, many times the animation and the voices didn't exactly fit right, pretty much the same as with Japanese made movies that are dubbed in English, the most famous of these being the Godzilla series.

Japanese animation took off like wildfire in the states. Americans couldn't get enough of these cartoons and over the years more and more were made.
Today we are in the midst of another Japanese invasion from cartoons like Pokemon, Yugioh and Card Captors.

As long as American audiences are fascinated by these very different kinds of cartoons the supply of them will most likely never run out.
